Beginners and Student Pilots

Are you interested in the hobby of Radio Control Aircraft?

SLRCFA offers an active training program to advance newcomers into the sport of radio control flying.  Visit our flying field and participate in an introductory flying lesson from one of our instructors.  Our instructors are ready to begin your one-on-one training!

It's safer and cheaper.

Your first flights will be made using a “buddy box” system.  This system utilizes two transmitters, one for the instructor, and one for the student, both connected. At any moment the instructor can take full control of the aircraft.  The risk of damaging the aircraft due to pilot error is almost eliminated... you won't have to buy and repair plane after plane to get experienced.

  • ONLY $50
  • Mentor: SLRCFA will assign you a flight mentor once we’ve verified your application.
  • No need to purchase equipment!
  • You will fly with your Mentor assisting using a buddy box. The plane you will fly is a club trainer (E-flite Apprentice™ or equivalent aircraft). Your training is free.
  • You will be eligible for all renewal December as a FULL or PRIME member!
  • Requirements: You may not have been an SLRCFA Member for the last five years. You must fly with a Mentor until your Mentor has signed off on your solo flight.
  • We teach you:
    • Basic aerodynamic principles of flight.
    • How to preflight check the aircraft.
    • Control inputs and how they effect the aircraft in flight
    • How to adapt to the environment (wind direction and speed, runway centerline references)
    • How to takeoff, establish the landing pattern, and land.
(taxi, takeoff, control during turns, straight lines, course adjustments, altitude control, landing setup, and landing)
    • Your first SOLO flights!
    • Aerobatic introduction
